Queensland Immigrants Index

Queensland State Archives have recently added an index to immigrants landed at Brisbane from 1885 to 1917. The records include the name of the ship and date of arrival. The following details may be recorded for each immigrant; name, age, marital status, trade or occupation, read, write, religion, country of origin, date left depot, address of employer or residence. This index contains a large number of Russian Immigrants. archives.qld.registers

Sale Cemetery

Sale Cemetery is located in Gippsland Victoria. An estimated 13,800 people were buried in the cemetery. The burial ground has been in operation since about 1855 and also contains a War Cemetery  and two memorial gardens for ashes placement. You can search the burial database at

Hunting Kiwis

We all know how important monumental inscriptions can be when researching our family history. Unfortunately to often the old burial grounds become neglected and vandalised. Hunting Kiwis is a project to photograph and record all headstones in rural Canterbury New Zealand. Six cemeteries have been completed and four more are in the process of being recorded. The website details their progress and has links to other NZ cemeteries including their locations.

Belfast Cemeteries

Belfast City Burial Records http://www.belfastcity.gov.uk/burialrecords/index.asp/Records

You can now lookup burial records online for three cemeteries Belfast City Cemetery from 1869, Dundonald Cemetery from 1905 and Roselawn Cemetery from 1954. The records provide name, age, address, date of death and burial date. The Belfast City Council also maintain a number of historical cemeteries visit their website for further details.

New South Wales Census Records

Recent additions to Ancestry.com.au include the 1891 & 1901 census collectors' books for NSW. Information provided is scant compared to British census records. Names the head of the household and includes address, number of male and female people in the household. The census records are held by the State Record Authority of New South Wales.
1891 census was taken 5 April 1891
1901 census was taken 31 March 1901

Tasmanian Valuation Rolls

The Gardens Family History web site focuses on Tasmanian family history and also includes headstone photos for a number of early cemeteries around Tasmania.
In January the 1875 Hobart & Launceston Valuation Rolls were added to the surname indexes which have been online for a number of years. Recently the Valuation Roll for the District of Fingal was added and provides the following details;

- Street number (if applicable)

- Description of property

- Name or situation of the property

- Name & residence of the occupier of the property

- Name & residence of the proprietor of the property

- Area of the property (acres)

- Rateable value; £

To search the valuation rolls select the section under Tasmania.

Manuscript 3251: Van Diemen’s Land 1821-1862
Echoes of Bushranging Days in Van Diemen's Land

Nine bound volumes of official documents relating to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania). Eight volumes contain statements & Police Magistrate reports for the districts of Launceston and Norfolk Plains (Longford). Also includes a number of miscellaneous depositions and memorials. One volume contains information about Tasmanian Aborigines. The original manuscripts are held at the National Library of Australia in Canberra.
These manuscripts have been transcribed and can be searched using a keyword.

WW1 photographic collection found

An article on channel seven's Sunday Night has revealed a collection of 3,000 photographic plates taken during WW1. A local photographer and his wife from the rural village of Vignacourt in France recorded the daily comings and goings of the soldiers that spent time in the area during WW1.
